"Welcome to Horlickville: History of the Racine, Wisconsin National Football League Franchise"by Matthew C. Snyder
A forgotten piece of Wisconsin football history emerges in this self-published title. Recent football fans may not be aware of the Racine football teams, but Snyder goes above and beyond to ensure all fans learn something new. This reviewer would have appreciated more of a narrative through their handful of seasons in the 1920s, but true football fans will enjoy the length and intricate details. Snyder includes photographs on almost every page and even includes for a play-by-plays for each game. Well-known players like Curly Lambeau and lesser-known local legends like Hank Gillo make appearances. The large blocks of text may be difficult to read for some individuals but the detail included does not disappoint. Die-hard football fans will want to check out this forgotten piece of early football history.
Gil Brandt book review
Gil Brandt, a longtime Dallas Cowboys personnel executive and member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, died Thursday August 31st, 2023, the team announced. He was 91.
Brandt was a member of the original Cowboys staff during the organization's expansion season in 1960 and remained with the team through 1988. His personnel moves and innovative approach to scouting and evaluation helped turn Dallas into a dominant force and one of the most popular franchises in domestic sports, as the Cowboys came to be known as "America's Team." Gil Brandt personally called “Welcome To Horlickville!” author, Matthew C Snyder and he shared his thoughts regarding a positive review of the book. Brandt also expressed support of the nominations of William Horlick Sr., George Ruetz and Hank Gillo to the Pro football Hall of Fame. He further shared good memories about spending time, years ago, visiting his Aunt who lived in Racine, Wisconsin. Gil ended the call by telling Snyder good luck with your historical pro football work.
